Dispensing antibiotics only by prescription to help contain antibiotic resistance

MUSCAT- Dr. Ahmed bin Salem Al-Maziri, Regional Director of the Eastern Mediterranean sector of the World Health Organization, praised the efforts made by Oman with regard to reducing the spread of antibiotic resistance through its strategies and policies.

Notable among these strategies is the non-release of antibiotics without prescription, thus controlling excessive antibiotic usage which can otherwise lead to pathogens building resistance to these antibiotics. In other words, rampant antibiotic usage can cause antibiotics to not work on certain patients due to the emergence of resistant bacteria, which can understandably prove fatal.
