First tourist heritage lodge and private museum opened in Oman

MUSCAT : The Directorate General of Heritage and Tourism celebrated the inauguration of the Museum of “Communication of Generations” and the “Kofan Heritage House” in Dhofar Governorate under the patronage of His Excellency Sheikh Tariq bin Khalid Al Hinai, Governor of Taqah.

The “Kofan Heritage House” in the old neighborhood in the Wilayat of Taqah in the Dhofar Governorate was converted into a heritage inn after several renovations. It is now a tourist destination where one can get acquainted with the ancient lifestyle and Omani architecture. Faisal bin Salem Kofan, the supervisor of the “Kofan Heritage House,” said that the house is estimated to be 150 years old and is considered one of the most beautiful traditional houses in the state in terms of shape, design, and its unique architecture.

The old neighborhood surrounds the fort of Taqah, which was built in the nineteenth century during the reign of Sultan Taimur bin Faisal Al Said (1913-1932), and the Al-Askar Tower, which housed the government’s military to protect and monitor the state in those days. One can also find here the historic Sheikh Al-Afif Mosque, where the people of the state used to gather for their religious rituals.

The Museum of “Communication of Generations” in the Wilayat of Taqah – the first private museum in the Governorate of Dhofar – includes four sections: the outer courtyard, which includes a display of local trees, including frankincense, coconut palms, sagots and kilts, a group of windows featuring heritage architecture, the Ghanja ship and several types of ancient fishing nets, and stones used in construction in the past.

Khaled bin Abdullah Al Abri, Director General of the Directorate General of Heritage and Tourism in Dhofar Governorate, said that this is the opening of the first private museum licensed by the Ministry and the first heritage inn in Dhofar Governorate today, and will highlight the cultural heritage and promoting historical tourism, which has witnessed a great boom in recent times.
