Housing ministry issues decision to regulate Oman’s addressing system

MUSCAT : The Ministerial Decision No. 200/2024, to become effective after 6 months (September 3), will create a centralized national database and develop a general unified model for addressing in the governorates, wilayats, villages, cities, neighborhoods and roads. It will establish an intelligent system to comprehensively integrate all provinces.

It will also facilitate access to targeted place, anywhere in the Sultanate of Oman, as quickly as possible.

Article 2 of the Decision stipulates that the Ministry will establish a smart and advanced addressing system, and for this purpose it may develop a general unified model for addressing in the governorates in coordination with the governors, provided that it includes the correct literal organization of geographical names in Arabic, Latin letters, spaces, logos, and any symbols used for the address in coordination with the concerned authorities.

Article 3 establishes that the Ministry is responsible for addressing urban plans, and that the labeling must include the following details:

  1. Basic elements consisting of the name of the governorate, name of the wilayat, name of the street and the number of the addressing unit.
  2. Sub-elements incorporating the name of the city, name of the village, and the name of the neighborhood.
The Ministry will establish a central national database related to addressing, and each governorate is required to provide the Ministry with that data on an ongoing basis.
