Ministry of Education, ROP launch drive against drugs

Muscat: The Directorate-General of Curriculum Development at the Ministry of Education, represented by the Department of Islamic Education Development, in cooperation with the Royal Oman Police, represented by the Directorate General for Combating Narcotic Drugs and Psychotropic Substances, hosted an event on ‘Educating about the dangers of drugs and their effects’ in three schools in Muscat Governorate.

The three-day event aims to educate students about the dangers of drugs, the correct ways to handle them and warning them about its dangers.

On the occasion, Qais bin Khalifa Al-Khuzairi, Head of the Department of Religious Culture, said: “This event comes within the framework of the religious culture plan on raising awareness of the dangers of drugs and their effects and warning the students against falling into the trap of promoters and bad companions, and instil in them the awareness of the necessity of preserving a balanced personality and adhering to Islamic values and morals.”

The event included a lecture presented by the Royal Oman Police to raise awareness on the dangers of drugs, psychotropic substances and methods of protection against them. The speaker elaborated on the types of drugs and their categories (manufactured, natural, and semi-natural), and focused on psychotropic substances, taking pills without a doctor’s prescription, the dangers of shisha, electronic cigarettes, smokeless tobacco, and methods of prevention from falling into the trap of drugs.

Among the effective programmes for educating students about the dangers of drugs is the presence of a mobile exhibition, which is a bus that puts up an integrated exhibition showing the types of drugs, psychotropic substances, and methods of concealment, smuggling, the prominent cases, etc.

The Ministry of Education, in cooperation with the Royal Oman Police, represented by the Directorate-General for Narcotics and Psychotropic Substances Control, seeks to implement awareness and preventive programmes that contribute to protecting students from the dangers of this scourge and ensure that the school children are free from drugs.
