Muscat records highest number of divorce cases in Oman

Musandam Governorate reported the lowest number of divorce cases in 2021

Muscat: 39,000 Omanis entered into wedlock while 6,000 got divorced in 2021, according to the statistics released by the National Centre for Statistics and Information (NCSI). The total number of divorce cases by the end of last year reached 41,549.

Muscat topped the governorates in the Sultanate of Oman in the number of divorces with 853 cases, an increase of 22.2  percent followed by North Al Batinah Governorate which registered 723 certificates while Musandam Governorate had the lowest number of divorce cases with just 25 in 2021.

The statistics by the NCSI indicated that 39,000 Omanis got married during 2021, including 34,000 who got married for the first time. The total number of married Omanis amounted to 971,442 by the end of 2021 representing 56.4 percent of total Omanis (15 years +) of whom 49 percent were male and 51 percent females.

The average age of married Omanis is 42 years, according to the edition of ‘Marital status in the Sultanate of Oman’.  

On education-wise marital status up to 2021, the statistics showed that 25 percent of married Omanis hold higher education diplomas and above,  37.7 percent  hold general education diploma certificate and 25.1 percent  hold certificate below the general education diploma.

The statistics also showed that 73 percent  of working Omanis (15-64 years) are married while the unmarried job-seekers amounted to 66 percent  out of the total jobseekers.

The number of documents of marriage in the Sultanate of Oman increased by 3.6 percent  in 2021 compared to 2020, when 19,294 marriage documents were registered at a rate of 53 marriage documents a day.

Meanwhile, the total certificates of divorce registered in the Sultanate in 2021 amounted to 3,837 certificates at a rate of ten divorce certificates a day, an increase of 12 percent  against the certificates registered in 2020.

Muscat Governorate registered 3,980 marriage certificates in 2021, an increase of 18.6 percent against 2020, followed by North Al Batinah Governorate which registered 3,783 certificates, a decrease of 4 percent  against 2020.

The marriage documents in Al Dakhiliyah Governorate decreased by 2.2 percent in 2021 compared to 2020.
