Oman airports witness 131% increase in international flights

MUSCAT: The number of international – both inbound and outbound – flights Sultanate of Oman’s airports – Muscat, Salalah, Duqm and Sohar – witnessed a record increase of 131.2% or 26,382 international flights at the end of June, 2022 compared to the same period in 2021.

In data issued on Tuesday by the National Centre for Statistics and Information (NCSI), the total number of flyers travelling through Oman’s airports increased considerably by 161%.

Record number of 3,888,323 flyers at the four airports in the Sultanate by the end of June 2022. The number of outbound flyers also rose by 114% compared to the same period in 2021, the NCSI data revealed.

The number of international and domestic flights went up to 27,880 flights (an increase of 14.8% and 3,382,855 flyers) at Muscat International Airport alone by the end of June 2022 compared to 13,612 flights (1,416,975 passengers) compared to 2021.

At the Muscat airport, as expected, Indians (at 139,441) topped the total number of passengers followed by the Bangladeshis (46,734) and Pakistanis (35,336).

The Salalah Airport also recorded an increase in the number of flights by 78.8% (or 3,483 flights) by the end of June 2022 but international flights went ahead by 184.8% and domestic flights increased by 36% to reach 1,888 flights compared to 1,388 flights during the same period in 2021. The domestic passengers also rose by 57.3% at Salalah.

At Sohar Airport, the international flights reached 356 flights with 32,071 passengers by the end of June 2022.

At Duqm Airport, there was only a slight rise of 6.4% (334) in domestic flights which carried 32,114 passengers (a rise of 424%) at the end of June 2022 compared to 314 flights (22,555) during the same period in 2021.
