Oman elections: Candidates who violate rules face fine up to OMR 4,000

MUSCAT: The Ministry of the Interior issued new regulations and fees for campaigning for the elections of members of the Shura Council and Municipal Councils.

The new regulations laid say that the campaign period which starts from the date of announcing the final list of candidates, must be adhered to.

The financing of the campaign is also the responsibility of the candidate.

The competent authorities have the right to remove any billboard or any violations if noticed.

The candidates will face a fine ranging from OMR 1000 to OMR 4000 if found violating the new rules.

Trade unions, associations and clubs have been banned from supporting candidates in any form. Gifts, donations, cash or in-kind assistance too have been prohibited. Candidates cannot use the logos of private institutions and companies during campaigning.

Only candidate’s personal photo, his full name, address, his biography, his qualifications and his vision to serve the state have been accepted.

The use of official emblem or flag or logos too has been prohibited.

The candidate must pay an amount of OMR 100 as a fee for all electoral propaganda. The electoral campaign insurance of OMR150 which candidates have to pay will be refunded.
