MUSCAT : In keeping with the Sultanate of Oman’s commitment to the goal of zero neutrality by the year 2050 and in implementation of international obligations in the field of environmental protection, Oman submitted the national action plan to reduce carbon dioxide emissions to the ICAO.
The Civil Aviation Authority noted that a national technical team was formed to formulate the national action plan to reduce carbon dioxide emissions consisting of specialists from the Authority, international civil aviation operating companies and Oman Airports Company.

The ICAO has set a long-term strategy on climate change for the international aviation sector, aiming to define a quantified CO2 emission baseline scenario, select appropriate emissions mitigation measures from ICAO’s basket of measures, and calculate the expected results of implementing those measures.
It aims to develop a better understanding of the projections of international aviation CO2 emissions, identify the most relevant mitigation measures, enhance cooperation between aviation stakeholders and support the understanding of policy decisions and facilitate capacity building and transfer of technology.
The most important mitigation measures in Oman’s State Action Plan (SAP) to reduce carbon dioxide emissions include information about national circumstances and aviation sector in country. It specifies that “2019 was adopted as the base year for building a scenario of carbon dioxide emissions from international civil aviation until 2050 in the business-as-usual scenario (without taking any mitigation measures).”
The carbon dioxide emission resulting from international civil aviation activities were calculated from local operators (Oman Air and Salam Air) based on fuel consumption and air traffic data. Mitigation measures that can be taken to reduce carbon dioxide emissions were identified and the impact of those measures was then quantified.
Mitigation measures included improvements in aircraft technologies (purchase new aircrafts), improvements in air and ground operations, improvements in air traffic management and CORSIA (Carbon Offsetting and Reduction Scheme for International Aviation).
