Oman’s North Al Sharqiyah preps up for winter tourism season

Muscat – Highlighting the Governorate’s preparedness for the season, Samiyah bint Hamad Al Busaidi, Director of Heritage and Tourism Department in North Al Sharqiyah Governorate, stated that the administration has examined the preparations of the hotel establishments in the wilayats and has followed up with these facilities to ensure the implementation of quality standards set by the Ministry of Heritage and Tourism for organising tourist camps and facilities.

The department also inspected new hotel rooms to accommodate tourists during the season and checked on the safety of the means of transportation within the camps and hotel facilities, while verifying the validity of related tourism licenses.

She pointed out that the wilayats of North Al Sharqiyah Governorate are known for their tourism potentials such as Al Sharqiyah Sands, the wadis, oasis and water springs, forts and castles, traditional souqs and ancient archaeological lanes.

The aim, she noted, is to fuel and further develop the tourism sector in the governorate by organising seasonal events related to desert, mountain or water adventure tourism which are popular among tourists. Other tourism activities during the season include visits to the site of water lakes in the Wilayat of Wadi Bani Khalid, which attract tourists for the purpose of relaxation, she added.

It is important to note here that North Sharqiyah is a popular tourist destination; last season saw an increase in the profits and revenues and an increase in the occupancy rate of hotel rooms, which ranged between 60 and 90 percent. Besides, the number of licensed hotel establishments reached 47 with 1044 hotel rooms.

She stated that the added value of tourist camps – as tourism products – has witnessed a tangible development, especially in the wilayats of Bidiya and Al Qabil, where people took advantage of the permits to construct tourist camps in accordance with the necessary requirements and regulations in force by the competent authorities.

According to her, the camps in the current period are witnessing more qualitative and formal development, which has taken on the character of nomadism in its components, while introducing certain technical aspects.
